The Iron Bulls

The median bucking bull career is 13 recorded outs. Exactly eight bulls in the record ever reached 100 — and one of them is still adding to a total no bull has ever seen: 161 outs and counting. This is the sport's least glamorous elite club, and it may be the hardest one to join.

Titles get the lights and records get the replays, but there's a third kind of greatness in the data that almost nobody tallies: showing up. Among every bull with at least four recorded outs, the median career is 13 trips. Two hundred ninety-seven bulls have reached 50. Exactly eight have reached 100. And precisely one has ever reached 150.

161 and counting

Mike's Motive isn't just first on the list — he's in territory no bull has ever occupied. 161 recorded outs since 2021, forty-one clear of second place, including the biggest single-season workload ever recorded: 37 outs in 2025 (he owns the fourth-biggest too, 34 in 2024). And the grind hasn't dulled him: across six seasons his average has never dipped below 43. He's active — by the time you read this, the number is probably already out of date.

Iron and gold rarely mix

Only one bull in the club carried both kinds of greatness: Smooth Operator, whose 117 outs came with two world titles and a 44.58 career average — the workload and the crown, which is part of why The Old Masters found him winning at nearly eleven. Just outside the club, two more managed the double: Chicken on a Chain (99 outs, 2007 champion) and Cripple Creek Promiseland, who put up a 45.46 average across 97 outs from 1998 to 2003 — champion-grade scoring sustained across an iron-bull workload, a combination the record has never quite repeated.

But for the rest, the club is its own reward. Five of the eight never contended for a title. What they did instead was answer the gate a hundred times — every one of those outs a bull somewhere else didn't have to take.

The iron programs

Look at the program column and the pattern from The Programs Behind the Gold repeats in a different key. Blake Sharp partnerships sit behind four of the eight — Mike's Motive, Whiplash, Rockville, and Hoka Hey, all active, all still adding outs in 2026. The Struve/Berger network claims three of the other four, from the mid-2010s era. Keeping a bull sound through a hundred outs is a management achievement as much as a genetic one, and right now one hauling operation is doing it four bulls at a time.

The workload era is now

One more pattern worth naming: three of the five biggest single-season workloads ever recorded happened in 2025 — Mike's Motive's 37, Rockville's 36, and Lights Out's 35. With the premier series, the Team Series, and the developmental tours all running, the modern calendar offers a durable bull more chances than any era before it. The iron-bull records of the next decade are being written right now, most of them by bulls on this list.
